Obituary for Albert E. "Al" Townsend

Albert E. Townsend, 76 of Locke, New York gained his angel wings on May 26, 2022 after an extended illness.

Born May 20, 1946 in Cortland, New York he was the son of the late Robert and Hazel Dellow Towsand.

Having been a lifelong area resident, he had graduated from Moravia High School, Class of 1965.

After graduation he proudly served his country during the Vietnam war with the United States Army where he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds in Action on May 13, 1967 in the Republic of Vietnam. He was also awarded Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle Bar, Marksman Badge with Machine Gun Bar, and the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross Medal.

He has been employed as a Machinist working for various places which included Smith Corona, Groton Auto, ED Clapp, Rose Inn and Buckner Mears. Al has been a lifetime member of the Locke fire department where he was voted Rookie of the Locke Fire Department in 1982-83. He was past Commander and 2nd Vice of the Moravia VFW, life member of DAV, Vietnam Vets, and the Purple Hearts. He enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing and especially working on his cars which proudly included his 1966 GTO.

Al's world revolved around his son Jonathan and they were inseparable. One would often see them tinkering in the garage or surveying their property in the trusted golf cart or tractor. Al will certainly be missed by Jonathan as well as his wife and many friends. He will be remembered for his quiet demeanor, his shy smile and his steadfast perseverance in living life.

Al Is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Lesa L. Eastman Townsend and sons, Albert Jr, of Auburn, Jonathan at home and his daughters, Heather (Scott) Lason of Virginia, Sharon (Tim) Washburn of Trumansburg, three grandchildren, Nicholas Townsend, Jason and Josh Kinney , sisters, Joan Reid of Moravia, Janice Griffin of Florida, brother, Robert Townsend of Moravia, his sisters- in- law, Betty Townsend of Mount Morris , Laurie (Robert) McCarney of Newfield, and brother-in-law, Bryan (Sonya) Eastman of Lansing, and Wayne (Kate) Eastman of Virgil and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his sons, Jeffrey Townsend and Raymond Teachout and siblings, Thomas, Norman, Gordon Townsend and June Carr.

Graveside services will be held at the Bird Cemetery in Locke on Tuesday, May 31 at 1 PM with full military honors.
