Kirk Edward McKay 78 of Cortland, NY passed away unexpectedly Sunday, April 24, 2022.
Born June 21, 1943, in Cortland, NY., he was the son of the late Leon E. and Geneva Gertrude Peppin McKay.
Having been a lifelong area resident he had graduated from Groton High School in 1962, followed by his enlistment with the US Air Force. Upon his return he was employed with Borg Warner until his retirement.
He served during the Viet Nam Conflict and was a proud member of the DAV and the Cortland American Legion and VFW, where he had been their past Commander.
He was the local "garage gathering" leader, any good weather his garage door was open with chairs waiting for all to stop by to sit, chat, or have a beer.
His neighbors will surely miss his lawn care and snow blowing up and down the street. He loved seeing and chatting with them all.
He received a special award from the Mayor of Cortland- "Extra Mile Hero" for being an outstanding City of Cortland Resident. He was very proud of that.
Kirk always had a great deep laughter and could tell some great stories! His kind heart would always help out someone who really needed it.
He is survived by his siblings, Gary (Nancy) McKay and Vivian (Gary) Frink, step-daughter Linda Collins,, grandchildren, Rachell (Ron) Marshall and Danielle Luke, Bradley Collins several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and special friends, Jeff Cornelius, Penny and Jim Kelly.
Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his wife Irmgard McKay, special friend, Beverly Surine, sister, Yvonne and her husband Bob Spry, brother, Ron McKay, brother-in-law Gary Cross, step-son, Tom Collins, grandson, Nicholas Collins, nephews Mark O'Brien and Thomas McKay and neice Tanya Mckay. He will be well received in heaven by his awesome family that passed before him.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at noon at the Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams St., Groton. The family will receive friends 11-12:00 prior to the service. Burial with full military honors will follow at the McLean Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the DAV in Cortland or to Wounded Warriors.
