Obituary for Edward T. ""Ed"" O'Neil

Edward T. O’Neil, 77, of Morton Ave., Groton passed away unexpectedly Sunday, January 19, 2020 at Guthrie Cortland Regional Medical Center after becoming ill at home.

Ed was born July 29, 1942 in Johnson City, NY the son of the late Thomas B. and Mary C. Lee O’Neil. He grew up in Endicott and graduated from Endicott High School. He went to work at IBM in Owego as a project manager where he stayed for 30 years until his retirement. He met the love of his life, Gail A. Thomas and they were married on May 5, 1979. He lived a short time in Glen Aubry and moved to Groton when he got married. Retirement from IBM for Ed did not mean “Stop working”. He worked at Greene’s Dry Cleaning in Moravia as a salesperson, the First National Bank of Groton, as a bailiff for the Groton Town Court, an assistant at Zirbel Funeral Home in Groton and detailed cars in his “spare time”. He was a past member of the Glen Aubry Rotary Club.

He was friendly to everyone he met and was always willing to help anyone who needed it. The light of his life was his granddaughter, Harper and totally enjoyed babysitting her after school and whenever he got the chance. A recent family trip to Disney World was a dream-come-true for him.

He is survived by his wife, Gail A. Thomas O’Neil at home; his son, James (Tina) O’Neil of Locke and his granddaughter, Harper O’Neil of Locke as well as several nieces and nephews and many, many friends.

In addition to his parents he was pre-deceased by a sister, Sandra Knapp.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2020, 1:00 pm at the Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams St., Groton. Interment at a later date will be in Groton Rural Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm prior to the services at the funeral home.
