Obituary

Dorita M. Sanford, 92, of Sykes Street, Groton passed away Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at the Guthrie Cortland Medical Center after a brief illness.

Dorita was born April 7, 1927 in Walton, New York, a daughter of the late John and Pauline Huyck Dicks.

Dorita grew up in the Walton area and married Maurice (Shorty) Sanford in 1946. They lived in the Fort Dix, New Jersey area before moving to Groton where she worked at Smith Corona from 1967 to 1983 before retiring. She and her late husband raised their family in Groton and enjoyed bowling in the Senior Citizens league for many years. She also was an Avon representative for 11 years.

Her and her late husband sponsored an annual art scholarship at Groton Central School for many years in memory of their late son, Thedore (Ted) who died in 1969.

She is survived by her children, David Sanford of Cortland, Darlene Sanford of Horseheads, NY, Doreen Blaasch of Adairsville, GA and Dwight (Butch) Sanford of Daytona, FL. She also has eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, a brother, Nicholas Dicks of Rome, NY and many nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to her husband, “Shorty” who died in 2007 and her son in 1969, she was pre-deceased by a sister, Nancy Greene and a brother, John Dicks, Jr..
