DeJour Xavier Gandy-Malone , 29 of Newfield, was woven into the tapestry of our family and the community and his suddenly being ripped away from us on December 7, 2019 has left a huge gapping hole in the hearts of those who knew him and loved him. If you knew him, he embraced you as his family.
When we think of our world, and the belief that one person could change it, it seems fictitious. But Dejour was the epitome of just that. He changed all of our worlds, the impact that he had on the lives of many is undeniable. His beautiful smile, his charisma, his contagious laugh, his confidence, his ability to shift the energy of any space he entered. His thoughtfulness, his compassion for others. His ability to empathize with complete strangers. He wore his heart on his sleeve, a kind gentle soul whose arms were always open when you needed a big hug. He was a gentle giant.
DeJour Xavier Gandy-Malone was born on February 21, 1990 in Ithaca, NY, to Resana Lynette Malone and Keith L. Gandy. DeJour began his life on his first cross country trip to Alabama, Georgia and Arizona with his late grandmother, Mother Ruby L. Malone at the early age of one week old. As a young child he loved playing with his cousins and spending time at his grandmothers. His favorite blanket and his “homie” were always close by. At the age of 8 years old, he performed in Spear in the Sun at the Hanger Theatre, written and directed by Chad Bostwick of Black Panther fame. He continued to develop his love of drama during his school years. He performed as Leroy in Fame and in Dr. Seuss’s Seussical, The Musical while at Newfield High School. He worked with the Tin Can Fantasy Factor and performed in productions with Running to Places.
DeJour attended Ithaca City School District and graduated from Newfield High School in the Class of 2008. Following graduation, he attended Erie Community College and studied Sports Management.
In 2010 he moved to Tucson, Arizona until his return to the Ithaca area. During the summer of 2012 he was employed at Tin Can Fantasy Factory. He was employed as a Corrections Officer at Louis Gossett Correctional Facility and most recently was employed by the Downtown Ithaca Childcare Center.
His love of children and young people was obvious as he greeted everyone at the door with a big smile. His fun loving ways and Sharky dance will be fondly remembered. He was an avid video gamer and enjoyed traveling, WWF, music, live concerts, music festivals, raging and drama. He enjoyed sports, especially playing football and basketball. His musical talents included drumming, dancing, singing, song writing and playing instruments. DeJour taught himself how to play the Saxophone, Guitar, Clarinet, and the Piano.
He leaves to cherish many wonderful memories; his loving mother, Resana Lynette Malone (Bolden), his dad Keith Carrington, his brothers Micheal (Megan) McCoy of Corning, NY and Daymone Meeks of Ithaca, NY; 3 sisters Kaprii (Mike) Carrington -Grady and Naomi Carrington of Illinois; Lenisha Gandy of Rochester, NY.
