Shirley M. Dayton, 78, of Cortland, formerly of McLean, died September 8, 2019 at Cortland Park Rehabilitation and Nursing after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Dayton was born October 21, 1940 in Ithaca, NY a daughter of the late Adam and Katherine Riihinen Minkowich.
A resident of the Tompkins-Cortland area for all of her life, she received two Associate's Degree from TC3. She loved working with people which led her to working in educational and personnel related employment. She worked at Smith Corona, Cortland Memorial Hospital, Montgomery Ward, Time Warner Cable and the National Academy of Arbitrators. Also extremely entrepreneurial, she owned three businesses, B&S Outlet (telephone sales), Busy Time Services (temporary employment services) and dGroup Learning Center (computer education & DMV Drinking Driver Program).
Always a first-adopter of technology, she was always willing to teach others about computers.
She married Bruce Dayton over 60 years ago. He passed away on September 8, 2013.
She had many interests and hobbies including doing wildlife photography with her late husband, crocheting blankets while watching Syracuse Orangemen basketball and enjoying her children
and grandchildren. She will always be remembered as a wonderful and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Mrs. Dayton is survived by her three sons, Chris, Keith and Kevin Dayton; grandchildren, Jesse, Mark, Calista, Kyle, Nicholas, Morgan, Paul, Grant, Brent, Emily and Abbey. She also is survived by several great-grandchildren, a brother and several sisters.
A Memorial Service will be held at later time and will be announced. There are no calling hours.
