Obituary

Carlton T. Dann, I, 77, of Lincoln Avenue, Groton died Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at the SUNY Upstate Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Carlton was born June 25, 1941 in Groton, a son of the late Clyde and Florence Mosher Dann Sr.

A lifelong resident of the Groton area, he graduated from Groton Central School. He joined the United States Air Force in August 1961, serving until his discharge in January, 1965. Carlton was always very proud of his service to his country and always saluted the flag at every opportunity.

He went to work at Smith Corona in Groton after his discharge. He met Alice Marie Ely later that year and they were married in October, 1965. Carlton became a line supervisor at Smith Corona remaining there for many years, later working at the South Cortland plant. After that he worked at various other companies in the area, Marietta, Pall Trinity and others until his retirement.

Carlton was a past member of the Carrington-Fuller Post 800, American Legion. Active in his younger years with sports, he belonged to the Corona Club, Stonehedge Golf Club and played softball in the Groton summer leagues for many years.

He is survived by his children, Delsy (David) DeMatteo of Groton, Brian Dann of Groton, James of Cortland and Carlton T. (CT) Dann, II of Groton; three grandchildren, Deidre (Allen) Gallow, Dominik DeMatteo and Cassidy Dann; a great-granddaughter, Ophelia Gallow; his sisters, Frances Evener and Alethea Grant, both of Groton and many nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by his wife, Alice in September 2017 and several brothers and sisters.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2019, 2:00 p.m. at the Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams Street, Groton. Military honors will be accorded at that time. Friends may call on Saturday the 16th from noon to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
