Donald U. Lane, 97, of Old Stage Rd., Groton, NY died September 5, 2018 at his home after an a short battle with lung cancer.
Born May 19, 1921 in Locke NY, he was the son of Milo and Lenora Upson Lane.
Having been a lifelong resident of the area, he graduated from Genoa High School and for many years owned and operated his dairy on Lane Road in the Town of Genoa where he had one of the first milking parlors in the area. After retiring from farming, he built a new house where children and grandchildren enjoyed many happy hours. He and his wife, Vi, took many trips both within the U.S and abroad. Not known to be extravagant, he surprised everyone when he bought himself a motorcycle just for fun. He spent many years restoring and caring for the Wilcox Cemetery in East Genoa where his ancestors were buried for generations. In later years, he refinished antique furniture, trunks, and hand-caned chairs which he generously gave to his children and grandchildren. Up until two months ago, he still mowed his own lawn, took care of the flowerbeds and exercised daily. Many neighbors will remember seeing him walking to St. Anthony's and back with his cane. He will be remembered as a kind hearted, caring husband, father and gentleman who believed in helping others.
He is survived by his loving wife of 76 years, Viola L. Bancroft Lane, his children, Sylvia (Philip) VanGuilder of Warrensburg, NY, Darryl (Nancy) Lane of Fort Ann, NY and April (Tom) Scheffler of Groton. There are 6 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren as well as a sister, Lucille Luther of Vestal, NY and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his granddaughter, Sherene Clark and his siblings John and C. Richard Lane.
A special thank you is extended to the crew members of Groton Ambulance who were so gentle, caring and respectful of our loved one.
