Obituary for William E. ""Bill"" Conner

William (Bill) E. Conner, 87, of Dewey Avenue, Groton passed away on Sunday, August 26, 2018 at SUNY Upstate Medical Center after a short illness.

Bill was born July 13, 1931 in Cortland the son of the late William S. and Alice MacDonald Conner.

A lifelong resident of the Groton area, Bill graduated from Groton Central School and then enlisted with the U.S. Navy serving four years before being honorably discharged. He was employed with Smith-Corona for 14 years and then SUNY Cortland as a maintenance supervisor for over 20 years until his retirement in the early 1990’s.

Bill loved the outdoors, being an avid fisherman, hunter, trapper and trap shooter. He loved spending time with “the guys” on Friday afternoons at the Groton Rod & Gun Club. His backyard was right next to the high school football field and was the place to be during games, partying and cheering the Groton teams on. Most of all Bill loved spending time with his family.

Bill was a member of the Groton Rod & Gun Club, Carrington-Fuller Post #800 American Legion, the 920 Club, the NRA, the Amateur Trapshooting Association and the Oneida Lake Association.

He is survived by his children, Colleen (Phil) Hamilton, Martin (Vicki) Conner, both of Groton, Kathy (John) Zenz of Bethlehem, PA and Michael (Sue) Conner of Northhampton, PA. A daughter-in-law, Deborah Mattoon-Conner of Sempronius, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Bill was pre-deceased by his wife, Patricia in 2006 a son, William P. Conner III in 2018 and two grandsons, Patrick Conner and Spencer Wing.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 31, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at the Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams Street, Groton. Interment with full military honors will follow in Groton Rural Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Friends are invited to a reception at the Groton Rod & Gun Club immediately following the cemetery service on Friday.
